This course provides comprehensive training in infection prevention and control practices essential for healthcare providers. Participants will learn strategies to implement both standard and transmission-based precautions, crucial for preventing the spread of infections in healthcare settings. The curriculum covers recognizing the elements required for transmission, identifying reservoirs and pathways, and discussing intervention strategies to minimize transmission.

Participants will also gain insights into protecting themselves from bloodborne pathogens, an understanding of high-risk pathogens, and mitigation strategies. Additionally, the course emphasizes the importance of protecting patients from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) such as CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP, NV HAP, C. difficile, and MDROs.

Upon completion, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a safe healthcare environment, ensuring both patient and staff safety.

This course is split into 4 modules that relate to infection prevention and control.

Module 1 Isolation

Learning objectives:

  1. Implement strategies for standard precautions in the healthcare setting
  2. Implement strategies for transmission-based precautions in the healthcare setting

Module 2: Recognizing Risk

Learning objectives:

  1. Describe the elements required for infection to spread
  2. Recognize reservoirs of infection in the healthcare setting
  3. Identify the pathways of infection in the healthcare setting
  4. Discuss intervention strategies to decrease the spread of infection in the healthcare setting

Module 3: Protect Yourself

Learning objectives

  1. Define bloodborne pathogens and describe which pathogens are high risk for healthcare workers after an exposure
  2. Discuss the risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure for healthcare workers
  3. Describe strategies to prevent bloodborne pathogen exposure for healthcare workers
  4. Recognize situations in which you should report an exposure and identify who to contact

Module 4: Protecting Patients

Learning objectives

  1. Define healthcare associated infections including CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP, NV HAP, C. difficile and MDRO
